The Beggar Was Humiliated on a Rainy Street… Then He Said Her Father’s Name

The rain had been falling over downtown Chicago for an hour when Samuel Reed settled beneath the narrow awning of an old bookstore.

His clothes were worn his shoes were. A faded cardboard sign rested beside him. Most people walked past without looking in his direction.

Samuel had become used to being invisible. He wasn’t asking for luxury or sympathy. He simply hoped someone might spare money for a warm meal and a dry place to sleep.

That evening however one passing woman would completely change the course of his life.

Claire Morgan a businesswoman in her early thirties stepped out of a black SUV while holding an umbrella. She was dressed elegantly in a coat and expensive shoes and two employees followed her toward a nearby restaurant.

As she passed Samuel he quietly looked up. For a moment he seemed frozen. Then he spoke her name. “Claire?” She stopped immediately.

Turned around. She had never seen the man before yet he knew her name. When she asked how he knew it Samuel reached inside his coat and pulled out an old photograph.

Claires expression changed the moment she saw it. The photograph showed a younger version of her father standing outside a building she recognized from her childhood.

Samuel asked if she remembered him. Claire immediately became defensive. She told him she didn’t know who he was and accused him of trying to manipulate her because he had recognized her from somewhere.

A few people nearby began watching the exchange. Claires embarrassment quickly turned into anger especially when Samuel refused to explain where the photograph had come from.

“Stop following me ” Claire told him coldly. Samuel hadn’t moved from his spot. Claires voice attracted attention. A restaurant employee standing near the entrance looked over.

One of Claires companions quietly suggested that they should call security. Samuel looked down at his soaked clothes.

Then back at Claire. He wasn’t angry. He simply said that he wasn’t trying to hurt her. He only wanted her to listen for one minute.

Instead Claire humiliated him in front of everyone.

She told him that people like him often used stories to get money from strangers. She asked whether the photograph was some kind of trick and accused him of inventing a connection to her family.

Several pedestrians began whispering. Samuel stood silently while the rain dripped from his hair. He could have walked away. There was something he needed Claire to know.

Then she noticed the photograph again.

“Where did you get that?” she demanded.

Samuel looked at her. Quietly replied, “From your father.”

Claires face became pale.

Her father, Richard Morgan had disappeared twenty-two years earlier.

Claire had been a child when it happened. Her family had been told that Richard left town unexpectedly after a business dispute. Years passed without any information.

Claires mother eventually accepted that he was probably dead. Claire never completely stopped wondering what had happened. She had spent years believing her father had abandoned the family.

Samuel pointed toward the building across the street.

“I was there that night.”

Claire stared at him.

“What night?”

“The night your father disappeared.”

For the time Claires anger disappeared.

She stepped closer.

“What do you know about my father?

Samuel didn’t answer immediately. He looked at the restaurant entrance, where several people were still watching him. Then he looked at Claire.

“I know what happened before he vanished.”

Claire demanded an explanation. Samuel told her they couldn’t have the conversation in the middle of the street. He wasn’t interested in money.

He wasn’t interested in attention. He wanted her to understand that the story she had been told about her father was not the truth.

Claire remained suspicious.

She asked why he was homeless if he had known her father.

Samuel smiled sadly.

“Because knowing powerful people doesn’t make you powerful.”

His answer confused her.

Samuel explained that he had once worked as a driver and personal assistant for Richard. He had been with him during some of the difficult months of his life.

Richard had discovered that someone inside his company was secretly moving money through accounts. He wanted to expose the scheme. Before he could do so he disappeared.

Samuel had tried to tell people what he knew.

Nobody listened.

Worse the people involved threatened him. Destroyed his reputation. He lost his job, his savings and eventually his home.

Over the years he became homeless carrying the photograph because it was the thing he had left connecting him to the man he had promised to protect.

Claire struggled to believe him.

She asked why he had waited long to find her.

Samuel reached into his pocket. Pulled out a small damaged phone.

“There was one thing I couldn’t understand ” he said.

“What?”

“Why your father called me that night.”

Claire stared at the phone.

Samuel explained that Richard had called him before disappearing. The call lasted less than a minute. Samuel had heard Richard say one sentence before the connection ended.

“He told me to protect his daughter.”

Claires eyes filled with tears.

For years she had believed her father had left because he didn’t care about her. Now a stranger sitting on a sidewalk was telling her that her father had been thinking about her until his final moments.

Claire suddenly felt ashamed of how she had treated Samuel.

She looked at his soaked clothes, his shoes and the cardboard sign beside him.

She realized she had judged him because of how he looked.

“I’m sorry ” she whispered.

Samuel. Didn’t say anything.

Claire then asked the question that mattered most.

“Do you know where my father is?”

Samuel looked toward the street.

His expression became serious.

“I know where he was going.”

Claires heart began racing.

“Where?”

Samuel slowly pulled another photograph from his coat. This one showed Richard standing beside a man whose face had been carefully scratched out.

Claire recognized the location immediately.

It was a warehouse owned by her familys company.

She looked at Samuel in shock.

“What happened there?”

Samuel lowered his voice.

“That is where your father discovered who was betraying him.”

Claire stared at the photograph.

Then Samuel added something that made her completely freeze.

“I didn’t just know your father, Claire.”

He paused.

“I was the person he called.”

The rain continued falling around them.

Claire looked at the photograph then at Samuel.

For twenty-two years she had searched for answers.

Now the man everyone had ignored on the sidewalk might be the person who knew the truth.

The truth, about her fathers disappearance was only beginning to surface.

Lesson

Never judge a person by their clothes, situation or appearance. Claire believed Samuel was another homeless man trying to manipulate her and her assumption caused her to humiliate someone who was carrying a painful piece of her familys history.

Sometimes the person everyone ignores may be carrying the truth everyone else has been searching for.
