The Judge Looked Down at His Notes… Then His Next Words Changed the Room!
Sometimes, the judge’s words can be far more powerful than a long speech. A stern expression, slight pause and a few well placed words can cause everyone in the courtroom to pay full attention.
In this courtroom scene we can see the stern, middle aged judge looking down at his notes and then looking up to address everyone present.

He has a stern expression and everyone can feel the tension in the room. If you were the person being addressed by the judge, how would you feel? For Ethan Miller, this would be a turning point in his life.
The Important Message Behind the Judge’s Courtroom Warning
Ethan Miller was 27 years old and had never seen himself as a bad person. He would work when he could, spend time with friends and normally try to avoid getting into any trouble. However, recently he had made some bad decisions.
He had told himself that everything would be okay, he had missed an important appointment, ignored some messages and decided that it wasn’t really a big deal.
Every time someone told him to take responsibility he would say that he would sort it later.
The Judge Was Silent
Judge Robert Hayes sat behind the wooden bench wearing his black robes and a stern expression. The American flag was hanging beside him and the room was silent.
The judge looked down at his notes, taking his time to read through whatever he needed to. He then looked back up. He did not make any dramatic movements to grab everyone’s attention.
This caused the tension in the room to increase.

Ethan stood beside his lawyer, Laura Bennett. She had already told him that this was a chance to be truthful about the situation. She reminded him that they would take everything into consideration.
“Just listen carefully and be truthful if the judge asks you anything.”
He nodded, feeling his hands start to get cold.
A Question To Make Him Think
The judge finally looked up and spoke to the courtroom. He was calm with a stern expression. In our fictional story, he asked Ethan to explain why he hadn’t dealt with the situation earlier.
Ethan opened his mouth to speak.
He had planned an excuse, he could blame it on being busy, confusion or others. However, looking up at the bench he realised that no matter what he said it wouldn’t change anything.

Laura was still beside him with her file. She didn’t interrupt or answer for him.
He finally admitted that he hadn’t taken the situation seriously. He had thought that by ignoring it, it would go away. However, by putting it off it had made things worse.
For the first time that morning he was being truthful.
The Courtroom Got Personal
Judge Hayes paused and looked back down at his notes. The room was so quiet that you could hear the smallest of movements.
In our fictional story, the message the judge was trying to get across wasn’t just about following the rules. He was trying to make Ethan realise that there are consequences to your decisions.

Often people will put off taking responsibility until things get serious. By this point there may not be many options available to you.
Ethan listened carefully.
He thought about all the calls he had ignored, advice he had dismissed and the people who had tried to help. He had always thought that taking responsibility meant giving up.
However, he was starting to realise that it can be the first step to putting things right.
The judge continued to speak calmly. There was no dramatic outburst but you could feel the tension.
Ethan finally realised that this wasn’t just another date on his calendar. This was an opportunity to prove that he was willing to learn from his mistakes.
What Happened After The Judge Spoke?
Ethan stayed still for a moment whilst the judge finished speaking. He wasn’t sure what would happen at the end of it all and his lawyer had never promised him anything.
However, something had changed.
He had been putting this aside for months but now realised that his actions had impacted others. His family had been worried, his lawyer had taken time out of her day
to prepare and the court had to deal with an issue that could have been taken seriously a lot sooner.
Laura reminded him gently that the most important thing was what he did after leaving the courtroom. He had to follow what the court said, take on his responsibilties and make sure he doesn’t make the same mistakes.

He nodded. This time he truly understood why she was giving him this advice.
The Message Of The Situation
Sometimes the most powerful moments in a courtroom aren’t the ones with lots of shouting and arguing. Sometimes the judge can give a calm message which makes you think about where your life is going.
Ethan’s story reminds us that ignoring an issue rarely makes it go away. Whether it be a legal responsibilty, personal promise or important decision, putting it off can cause issues that are harder to manage.
Taking responsibility means being truthful about what has happened, listening to the correct advise and making an effort to improve.
The main message is to not put off taking your responsibilites seriously until you’re stood in front of a judge. Taking a small decision to be truthful today could stop a large issue tomorrow.
Sometimes the most important moment in a courtroom isn’t the final decision but when someone finally realises that their decisions matter.
