Her Parents Forbade Her From Marrying the Man She Loved… Then His Father Revealed the Truth
The rain tapped at the windows of the Bennett household on this particular night. Sophie Bennett, twenty-five years old, stood in the house’s living room with tears rolling down her cheeks. Her parents, Richard and Elaine Bennett, were staring at their daughter

Sophie expected a lecture maybe even an argument. She did not, however, quite expect the look on her father’s face. As if she had betrayed the family.
“You’re not marrying him,” her father stated.
Sophie wiped her tears. “Dad, you can’t decide that.”
Her mother’s voice trembled. “Sophie, please understand. We just know what’s better for you.”
Sophie had no idea what had gotten into her parents. She had dated Ethan Cole for almost three years, and he was a wonderful guy.
He had never given them any reason to doubt him, and he had never been rude to them.
Outside the window, Sophie could see Ethan waiting in his car. She had asked him to wait while she talked to her parents one more time. She had wanted to convince them to accept him.
And yet, her father had made his expectations clear to her.
“If you marry Ethan,” Richard said, “know that we won’t be there for you.”
Sophie blinked in shock. “You’d do that? Abandon me over some guy your parents don’t like?” Her father turned his back to her. “It isn’t that simple
Sophie narrowed her eyes. “What aren’t you telling me?” Her parents remained silent for a moment. Then, Sophie turned to her mother.”Tell me.”
Elaine shook her head “It’s not that simple,” she repeated.
Sophie turned to her father. “Then tell me!” Her voice trembled with emotion. “Why are you so against Ethan
Her father’s jaw tightened. “We don’t hate him.”Then why don’t you let me be with him?”
The room fell silent again. Sophie felt a wave of frustration wash over her. “I’ve been with Ethan for three years! You knew nothing about him! If I marry him, you will know everything!”
It was Richard who spoke this time. His voice rose with emotion. “Because his father ruined ours!”
Sophie gave her father a strange look. “What did you say?”
Her mother looked at her husband in surprise. ” Richard …” But Sophie turned to her father. “What did you say?”
His gaze dropped to the floor. “Ethan’s father is Victor Cole.”
Sophie gave him a strange look. “I know that.”
Her father’s expression darkened. “You don’t know what he did.”
Sophie shook her head. “Tell me

Her father did not answer immediately. When he did, he told her that Ethan’s father had been his best friend. Richard and Victor had opened a construction company together many years earlier.
Somehow, the two friends’ relationship had deteriorated, and the business had failed.
Her father claimed Victor had stolen from him. According to him, Victor had betrayed his trust and stolen a large sum of money. Sophie turned to her mother
surprised to see the look of sadness on her face. “You know about this, don’t you?”
Elaine looked down at her hands. “I know there was more to it than you told Sophie. I know your father never wanted you to know.” Sophie looked at her father. “It’s true, isn’t it?”
Her father said nothing. Sophie turned to Ethan. “Did your father really steal from him?”
Ethan shrugged. “It doesn’t matter what he did.”
Her father’s glare snapped at him. “It does, believe me.”

Ethan turned back to Sophie. “When I was looking for information about my father, I found out about what had happened between him and yours.”
The room fell silent. Sophie looked at her father. “Tell me what happened.”
Richard turned to Ethan. “You think I stole from your father?”
Ethan’s fingers tightened around the edge of the table. “Your father told me so himself.”
There was a shocked hush as Ethan explained what had happened between his father and Sophie’s. According to him, Richard and Victor had been best friends.
They had opened a construction company together, which had been doing well until they discovered that someone had been stealing from them. Victor wanted to investigate, but Richard did not want any publicity.
Ethan explained that the two had argued about what to do, but in the end, Victor had discovered the documents implicating Richard.
However, it turned out that someone had removed vital information from the documents. Victor was accused of theft, and Richard kept the company. In the end, Victor lost everything, and Richard lost his best friend.
Sophie looked at her father. “Is this true?

Her father did not respond. Elaine slowly sat down on the couch, watching her husband. It seemed that she knew more than she had let on. Sophie turned to her mother. “You knew, didn’t you?”
Her mother’s tears streamed down her face. “I knew there was more to it than you told your father. I know your father never wanted you to know.”
Ethan reached into his coat pocket and pulled out an envelope. “My father left this with me,” he said. He handed it to Sophie, who opened it and examined its contents.
There were several documents inside, including letters between Victor and Richard, bank statements, and other documents that proved their accusations.
Sophie flipped through the documents, noticing the various transfers of money. Then she saw something that caught her eye.
One of the transfers had gone to a company she recognized. It was one of Richard’s lawyers. Her father had not told them about this.
Sophie looked up at him. “Dad …”
Her father sat down on the couch. For the first time that evening, he looked genuinely tired. “I didn’t steal anything,” he said.
Ethan looked at Sophie. “Maybe he didn’t.”
Everyone gave him a strange look. “But someone did steal from both of our fathers,” Ethan continued. “I think they were using them.

The betrayal of their friendship had destroyed their businesses and ruined their lives. Sophie turned to her father again. “So, you were afraid that I might make the same mistake?”
Her father’s eyes were red. “I was so afraid of losing you, so I almost lost you.” Tears of frustration ran down Sophie’s cheeks. “I thought I was doing the right thing by keeping you away from him.”
Sophie gave his hand a squeeze. “I know.” She then turned to Ethan. He gave her a reassuring smile. There was, however, one mystery that remained unsolved. Who had stolen the money?
The documents could hardly be described as conclusive evidence. And yet, when Ethan turned the page, everyone could see one name that made Richard turn white.
The man who had betrayed not only his best friend but also Sophie and Ethan had been someone they had all trusted.

Lesson
Sometimes parents can act out of fear rather than malice. Richard and Elaine both feared that Sophie would make the same mistake they had, and so they acted out of fear rather than trying to
do what they thought was best for their daughter. Their misguided intentions nearly led to Sophie missing out on true love.
We should always learn from the mistakes of the past. Parents must, however, accept that their children are separate individuals. Ethan was a good man, and his relationship with Sophie deserved to be supported.
And sometimes the truth is rarely black or white. The truth wasn’t that simple for this story’s characters. It was a series of events in which people had
acted out of a misguided sense of loyalty, thinking they were doing the right thing at the time. It’s about seeing through the lies and realizing that the faults of those in power run much deeper than most people realize.
