Her Father Was Taking His Last Breath Then a Stranger Blocked Her Path

She Ran to See Her Father One Time Someone Stood in Her Way

Monday mornings are really crazy at St. Grace Medical Center. Ambulances are always. Going. Nurses are running around like they are in a hurry

Families are sitting in the waiting room looking worried. They are all hoping for some news.

Olivia Carter is one of them. She is a 28 year graphic designer. She loves her father much. Since her mother passed away it has been the two of them

Her father, Robert worked hard to take care of her. Even after he retired he always told her to follow her dreams.

Olivia was working on her computer one Monday morning. The phone. It scared her. She did not know who it was Caller she said to herself. She was not sure if she should answer it

Then she did. It was a nurse from the hospital

“Miss Carter your father is in the hospital. He is in the Intensive Care Unit. Can you please come here away?” Olivias hands started shaking. She looked at her phone

Said Oh my God She grabbed her bag. Ran out of the building. She did not even turn off her computer. On her way to the hospital she prayed that she would not be too late

When she got to St. Grace Medical Center she ran to the care unit. She had tears in her eyes. Then a tall man in a fancy suit stepped in front of her. He was talking on his phone.

“Excuse me!” Olivia said. She tried to walk around him.. He turned around and looked at her. “You need to wait. The doctors are still with him

“I do not have time to wait Olivia said. She was very upset Please he might not make it if I do not see him

Her hands were shaking. She pointed to the intensive care unit doors.

The man, Victor looked at her like he felt sorry for her Hospital policy he said

Some people who were standing near them started talking. “Please move ” Olivia said. “He might not make it if I do not see him now!”

Victor crossed his arms You have to wait over he said

Olivia tried to walk around him He got in her way You heard me he said.

Olivia started crying. She looked at Victor. She wanted him to let her through. She was a few feet away from the doors. She could hear the heartbeat monitor beeping

Then the intensive care unit doors opened. A doctor came out He looked at Olivia. Then he looked at Victor Are you crazy? Get out of my way he said

Victor looked surprised. “I am sorry doctor. She was just asking to wait ” he said.

The doctor shook his head. “She is Robert Carters daughter. He has been asking for her. Every minute counts!”

The doctor looked angry If you had not stopped her he would not have had to wait The doctor glared at Victor. Then he opened the intensive care unit doors for Olivia Hurry. He needs to see you.”

Olivia ran in. Her heart was beating fast. Her father, Robert looked up at her. He had eyes. Olivia held his hand. “I knew you would come he said.

“I am here dad. I am not going anywhere Olivia said Robert smiled at her.

“See that you do my child Robert said No matter what happens you must always choose kindness Olivia nodded. She was crying I promise she said.

A minutes later Roberts eyes closed for the last time. The heartbeat monitor showed a line. Olivia watched silently.

Even though she was very sad Olivia was glad she made it in time. She was able to say goodbye to her father.

Outside the care unit the doctor talked to Victor You did not know what was happening Sometimes one thing can change a familys life forever.”

Victor looked down. He realized that he had caused a lot of pain for Olivia and her father. A weeks later Victor went back to St. Grace Medical Center.

He donated money to the hospital. He started the Family Emergency Assistance Program. This program helped family members of people in the care unit

They did not have to ask for help. Victor remembered the look, on Olivias face. He wanted to be a person.

Months passed. Olivias life started to get to normal. She still missed her father. At least she said goodbye to him

The last thing he said to her reminded her to choose kindness. So Olivia volunteered at the hospital every weekend She helped families

Gave them emotional support. She always smiled when they thanked her.

My father taught me that kindness is the important thing she would say When Olivia walked by the intensive care unit doors she remembered the promise she made to her father

She did not want to waste her time being angry or selfish. She wanted to spread joy and kindness. That was the important thing she learned from her father

Lesson

Life can change in just a few moments A small delay a careless decision, or a lack of compassion can leave someone with a lifetime of regret We should never judge another person’s urgency because we don’t know the pain they are carrying

Kindness, empathy, and understanding can mean more than rules or schedules.

When someone is fighting to be with a loved one showing humanity is always the right choice Sometimes the greatest gift we can give another person is simply helping them reach the people they love before it’s too late
