For over 25 years, Margaret Wilson has been working for one of the richest families in the Boston region. Every morning without a day’s delay, she did the housekeeping, prepared breakfast, and ensured everything was in perfect order before her employers arrived home from work.

She never asked for anything in return for her hard work except for being able to work there.
Margaret never failed to come to work late or complained about her duties. Despite working in the house she never treated it like her own private dwelling.

Margaret saw herself as part of the family and cared for the children, adults and elderly just as if they were her own relatives.

It all changed when the beloved motherly figure in the house passed away. Her eldest son Ryan inherited the house and the business. Ruthless and ambitious Ryan was more interested in expanding the business empire and paid no heed to the housekeepers, cleaners or waiters who worked in the house.

He never saw them as part of the family.

One Monday morning Ryan walked into the house and was surprised to find a tiny scratch on one of the expensive antique tables. Without asking any questions Ryan yelled at Margaret accusing her of breaking the table.

Margaret looked at him in disbelief as he continued berating her. “This is not the first time you are damaging the furniture and other expensive items in the house. I have tolerated your behavior for too long! You are fired!
Margaret was shocked at his outburst but held her tongue. Ryan pushed her toward the front door telling her she could leave.

Margaret almost stumbled but regained her balance.

Instead of arguing with Ryan, Margaret picked up her old leather handbag, cast a final lingering look at the house and pulled out a letter from her bag. She placed it on the table and turned to face Ryan.
“I want you to read this letter before you throw me out of the house,” she said quietly.
Ryan scoffed and shook his head in disbelief. “Another one of your lies!

The front door shut with a soft thud.
Ryan glared at the letter on the table. He was just about to drop it into the nearest waste bin when he stopped. On the envelope were four simple words.

“For my dear son.”

Before you decide to take any further action, I ask that you recall all the good times you spent with Margaret. She stood by me during my darkest days and made sure I did not feel lonely.

She took care of this family with a steady hand and heart even when I was too weak to do so myself. Margaret made sure your little brothers and sisters, waited on you hand and foot and offered her constant comfort when you needed it most

If she leaves us, treat her well as you would me for she has been like a mother to you. Kindness will always be remembered by those who matter most.

Ryan’s hands trembled as he read the note. The room seemed to spin as he stared at the paper in disbelief. The next thing he knew, his wife Sophia had come and taken the note from his hands. Tears streamed down her cheeks as she read the note.

“We never appreciated her,” she murmured.
Ryan’s heart clenched with guilt

He did not waste another minute. He jumped into his car and sped off into the city searching for Margaret.
After hours of searching, Ryan spotted a woman sitting on a park bench waiting for the city bus.

Ryan walked up to her and she stood up politely. “I am so sorry about earlier. I promise to treat you better from now on,” he said.

“I never wanted your pity,” Margaret said gently.
“I only wanted you to remember what your mother taught you,” she added and handed him the letter back.
Ryan put the letter back into his jacket pocket and tucked it safely into his wallet. From then on, Margaret was no longer seen as just an employee.

She was a cherished member of the family who was invited to every function or celebration that took place. A few months later, Ryan honored all the hardworking men and women who had dedicated their time and energy to making sure his family always lived comfortably.

Every year on a specific day, all the housemaids, waiters, cleaners, or workers who served him were invited to attend an annual celebration where they were publicly acknowledged for their hard work and honesty.

Margaret’s letter had opened Ryan’s eyes to a valuable lesson none of his wealth and success could have taught him before.
