He Almost Threw It Away- Until He Read His Father’s Name

The business card that changed everything

It was a Friday evening when downtown Chicago was filled with people hurrying home after a long work week. The yellow cabs were slowly moving through the traffic.

Among the taxis was one with a haired driver Henry Brooks. He was past his driving age. He never rushed. His old car never failed him. He always had a smile on his face when he saw a new passenger

Henry had to retire when his wife passed away.. Driving made him happy because he met different people and saw familiar city sights.

On this Friday evening Henry was driving a passenger from the business district. In the middle of the road he waved at a man in a suit who carried a luxury briefcase. Jason Miller, a businessman in his late thirties opened the passenger door of Henrys taxi.

Grand Palace Hotel Jason said while looking at his phone.

Henry tried to talk to Jason on the way to the hotel. Busy day at work sir?” Henry asked Jason didn’t even look at him. He waved his hand telling Henry not to ask questions. Just drive, please ” Jason said. Henry. Drove in silence.

After twenty minutes the taxi stopped in front of the Grand Palace Hotel. Jason got out. Threw a couple of dollars on the seat without saying a word. The businessman walked towards the hotel entrance. Henry called him.

Sir you left something in my taxi Henry said. Jason turned around. Saw a business card on the back seat. It was a card with the print barely visible. Henry picked it up. Showed it to Jason

Aren’t you supposed to leave business cards on the seats of your taxi?” Henry asked Jason.

Jason took the card. Looked at it closely. Suddenly his face changed. He looked pale then red and his hands started shaking. After a seconds Jason looked at Henry with wide eyes. His hands were still shaking as he asked a question that confused Henry. Where did you find my fathers business card?

I didn’t. You dropped it in my taxi Henry answered. Jason looked at the business card again this time with a smile. He didn’t understand what made him react like that. Henry also looked at the card. Saw that it was old.

The name of Jasons father, William Miller was on it. Jason hadn’t talked to his father in a year. I thought those were all lost Jason said quietly.

Henry said, “Sometimes the insignificant things remind us of the most precious moments.”

They looked at each other for a seconds. Then Jason turned to the seat and watched the worn business card one last time. I spent the ten years seeking success ” Jason said. “I built companies bought a luxury car went to projects every day.. I seem to have lost something on my way.”

Jason looked at Henry. “It is not the material goods that bring happiness.” He looked towards the hotel entrance. “I missed my father.”

Henry gave Jason a look. He understood him without needing him to explain. My wife used to say that business prospects change but family and friends remain forever ” Jason said.

Jason stared at the business card. It reminded him of his father, William Miller. He was a man with an extraordinary character

“I wish I had seen this card twenty years earlier ” Jason said to Henry. I wish I had known this card twenty years earlier ” Henry replied. . Jason and Henry spent long and silent seconds looking at each other. Then Jason turned to the hotel entrance.

“I was due to have another business meeting tonight ” Jason said to Henry. “However it seems I have changed my plans.”

Henry gave Jason a smile. Jason didn’t want to go to his business meeting. Jason looked at Henry with tears of joy and sorrow.

“I think I have found something precious to me than money ” Jason said. You have found it ” Henry replied. “You will always find it if you look for it in the place.”

Jason was silent for a moment watching the hotel entrance. Then he took out his phone. I will cancel the rest of my business meetings for tonight ” Jason said. “I will fly to the city where my father still lives and tell him my feelings.

The day Jason arrived in the city where his father still lived. William Miller opened the door and was surprised to see Jason standing in front of it. For a seconds they stood silently face-, to-face. Jason held out the business card in his hand.

I think I forgot about my father ” Jason said quietly. You remembered William replied with a smile.

That evening father and son sat in their living room telling each stories. They shared their memories photograph albums and dreams they still cherished. After spending evenings together Jason visited his father every weekend.

Jason looked at the business card one last time before putting it in his wallet. On the back of the business card William had written, “Success means nothing if there is no one to share it with.” Jason put the business card in his wallet. He vowed never to part with it.

Lesson

Life often encourages us to chase success, promotions, and financial goals, but true happiness is found in the people who stand beside us through every season of life

A few extra hours at work can usually wait, but the opportunity to spend time with our parents, family, and loved ones is precious and cannot always be recovered

Kindness, gratitude, and meaningful relationships are the greatest wealth anyone can have. Sometimes, the smallest object a faded business card, an old photograph, or a handwritten note can remind us of what truly matters.
