He Held It Together Until the Judge Said “Two Years in Prison”… Then Everything Changed

The room was filled with silence as Ryan Mitchell, an American citizen and 34-year-old, stood beside his lawyer, Daniel Brooks. Ryan wore an orange priso

n jumpsuit as he tried to hold his composure. The tension in the air was electric as Ryan’s eyes landed on the few members of his family in the gallery.

Ryan’s younger sister, Emily, was in constant sight as she had been present for almost every court hearing. Ryan turned to his right where Daniel stood. “Just breathe, Ryan. Whatever the judge has to say, we’ll take it one step at a time,” said Daniel as he placed a reassuring hand on th

e table in front of him. Ryan gave a small nod, but his hands were visibly shaking. Sitting at the bench was Judge Robert Harrison, an older American judge with grey hair and

a composed expression. He glanced at the sentencing papers for a few seconds before looking up at Ryan. “Mr. Mitchell, you have been given numerous opportunities to speak to the court. Before I announce the sentence is there anything you’d like to say?” Ryan gulped and looked

at his attorney before casting his gaze on his sister again. “I just want to say that I’m sorry,” he said softly, “I know people have heard that before but I am being sincere.

The judge gave a small nod. “I understand.” Ryan took a deep breath before continuing. “I know I made a horrible decision and I can’t change that.”

Daniel placed a comforting hand on Ryan’s shoulder before he continued speaking. “All I can think about is my family. My mother stopped coming to court because she can’t stand seeing me

like this. My sister tells me everything will be fine, but I know she is lying.” Ryan’s voice began to tremble. “And my daughter, she keeps asking when daddy is coming home.”

There was a deafening silence as the room seemed to hold its breath. Ryan cast his gaze downwards on the cuffed hands in front of him. “I don’t know what I

‘m going to tell her if I’m not there.” Judge Harrison listened intently before he replied. “Mr. Mitchell, I understand this is difficult but the court has to

consider the repercussions of your actions as well as your personal circumstances.”

Ryan gave a slow nod. He had braced himself for a severe punishment, but he secretly hoped for something less. Judge Harrison looked down at the paper

one more time before Daniel leaned in close and whispered, “Stay calm.” Ryan took another deep breath as the judge read out the formal details of the case.

He paused before looking up at Ryan and announcing, “The sentence of this court is two years in prison.”

Ryan’s expression immediately changed.

For a few seconds he stood there motionless, eyes locked on the judge as if he hadn’t heard the words come out of his mouth. Slowly he turned to look at his attorney who gave a small nod.

Ryan,” he said quietly, but Ryan shook his head from side to side. His breathing began to quicken as he looked up at the gallery where his sister was covering her mouth with her hand.

It was at this moment Ryan seemed to realize the gravity of the situation.

“Two years?” Ryan whispered.

Judge Harrison nodded. “Yes.”

Ryan looked down at the floor, his shoulders shaking as he fought to compose himself. He wiped his face with his shoulder since his hands were cuffed behind his back. Daniel came closer. “

It’s ok,” he said quietly. Ryan looked up at him with tears in his eyes. “No, it’s not. My daughter is six years old. Two years is a long time to her.” Daniel didn’t have an answer so

he simply stood by his client’s side letting him have some space. Ryan turned to look at his sister. “Emily,” he said, his voice breaking. She stood from her seat in the gallery.

“I’m here.” Ryan shook his head. “Please don’t make my daughter think I left her.” Emily immediately began to cry. “She knows you love her.” Ryan replied,

“Tell her everyday.” Emily nodded. “I will.” Ryan looked down again. “I thought I was going home today.” Emily wiped her tears. “I know.

Judge Harrison stood and said quietly watching Ryan’s every move. “Mr. Mitchell.” Ryan looked up at him. The judge’s voice was not angry but firm as he spoke.

Two years is a serious sentence but it is not the end of your life.” Ryan gave a small nod but made no reply. The judge continued. “You can’t change the decisions that

led you here, but you can decide what to do with the time that remains.” Ryan slowly nodded. “Yes, your Honor.” The judge added, “Your daughter will still need a

father when you get back. The question is what kind of father are you going to be?”

Those words seemed to strike Ryan in a different way.

He took a long breath and wiped his eyes again. “I’ll be better,” he said. Judge Harrison replied, “Don’t promise me. Prove it to yourself and your family.

Ryan nodded. “I will.” Daniel looked at him and said quietly, “That’s all we need to focus on right now.” Ryan looked at his sister one more time. “I love you.” Emily smiled through her tears. “I love you too.”

The guards came to escort Ryan back to prison. He turned around one more time to look at the judge. “Your Honor?” Judge Harrison gave a small smile. Ryan

hesitated before saying, “Thank you for letting me speak.” The judge gave a small nod. “Use the time wisely.” Ryan gave a small nod before walking towards the

doors of the courtroom. As he walked away he was not smiling, nor was he pretending everything was going to be fine. But the anger that had been so apparen

t when he walked in was gone. A man had finally faced the realities of his choices and realized that two years could be either a long time to regret or a valuable learning experience.

Emily watched as the doors closed behind his brother. She wiped her tears before quietly whispering, “We’ll be here when you come home.”

Learning

Sometimes a single sentence can change the course of our lives. We can’t always change the consequences of our actions but we can change what we do with the time remaining. The first step to change always begins when the excuses stop and responsibility kicks in.
