The Store Manager Humiliated a Pregnant Woman… Then He Discovered She Owned the Store

Lydia Carter had always believed that the key to truly understanding every business was to perceive it from the point of view of an ordinary customer.

At thirty-one, Lydia was an experienced businesswoman owning a decent department store in the centre of Chicago.

However, she was also new to the position of the owner as she acquired the place only a few weeks ago. Although it would have been natural for her to announce her arrival and make a fuss about it

Lydia decided to explore the store incognito in order to experience the satisfaction of its regular clients first hand.

On a bright Saturday, wearing a white coat and soft, comfortable shoes, Lydia entered the store. Being pregnant, she walked slowly from rack to rack, occasionally stopping to rest her belly.

She browsed the clothes and soon bought a few things for her home and a present for her future child. Having made her purchase, she handed the receipt to the cashier and, putting the bags in her holdall, headed for the exit.

Yet, as she was about to leave, a firm voice called after her.

“Ma’am, a moment, please!”

She turned around and saw the store’s manager, Gregory Hale, rushing towards her.

Gregory had been working in the store for many years and was known to be quite strict with the staff. Nevertheless, Lydia was surprised by his sudden accusations.

“Sir,” she said, showing him the receipt. “Clearly stating the items I have bought. I believe it is better to double-check in the register.”

However, instead of examining the chit, Gregory looked at Lydia with suspicion, causing quite a scene as several customers halted nearby to observe the interaction.

Lydia could only watch as the manager peered at the receipt and said condescendingly.

“I see no reason for you to be here,” he said, “and most people have some reasonable explanation for their visits.”

Lydia’s eyes narrowed as she studied this unpleasant man. She was beginning to lose patience.

“I have paid for all the items in this receipt,” she said quietly.

“I repeat, I see no reason why you should be here,” Gregory said, crossing his arms over his chest. “So, may I ask you to explain, ma’am?”

Lydia looked at him, surprised by his rudeness. The situation had begun to make little sense to her as she had never meant to cause any trouble.

It was Gregory who seemed to have taken it upon himself to accuse her of stealing when, in fact, she had simply come to browse the store’s goods as an ordinary customer.

Luckily, a young cashier who assisted Lydia earlier had taken notice of the situation.

“Sir,” she said timidly, “I believe you are mistaken. I remember this woman, she paid at my register.”

“Indeed,” said Gregory, turning to the cashier. “Now, if you will kindly give me the receipt, I will take it from here.

Lydia glanced around, catching the cashier’s comment. Some of the bystanding customers shook their heads, muttering a few disapproving remarks.

This incident could have been easily avoided if not for Gregory’s rudeness. Instead of paying attention to the cashier’s words, he continued his accusations.

As Lydia glanced at his sneering face, she decided to show this man what true manners were.I see no reason for you to be here,” she repeated, this time taking out her phone.

Gregory gave a condescending laugh. “Calling the owner now, ma’am?”

Lydia looked straight at him. “Actually, I am calling the owner.”

Gregory’s laughter ceased as she pressed a few buttons on her phone. Moments later, the receiver rang, and a man answered.

“Lydia? Is everything alright?” the voice at the other end of the line asked. The line went silent as Gregory’s smirk vanished.

Lydia put the phone on silent mode.I am quite alright, thank you. However, one of your managers seems to believe that I have stolen at my own store. I am calling to personally talk to the owner.”

There was a tense pause as Lydia’s eyes met Gregory’s.

“Who is that?” the man at the other end of the line asked. Lydia did not answer. She only looked at Gregory.

“I believe Lydia wants to speak to you personally,” she said quietly.

The man sighed. “Well, this is quite a surprise. Tell me, who is calling? I am calling as Lydia Carter,” she said firmly. She is a customer,” Gregory interjected. Lydia turned to him.

“A customer who has just entered your store and is about to be humiliated by you,” she replied.

There was a pause as the man on the phone cleared his throat.

“I see.” He turned to Gregory. “Tell me, who is this woman? I… I think she is a customer,” the manager stammered.

“Not really,” said the man on the phone. Lydia turned to the bystanding customers and employees.

This is Lydia Carter, the new owner of the store,” he announced. A hush fell over the gathered crowd as Lydia met Gregory’s eyes.

“You… you own the store?” Gregory stammered. Lydia nodded.

Yes, I do,” she said simply. Gregory immediately started apologizing, explaining that he had no idea about her intentions and that he did not mean to insult her in any way.

Lydia only stared at him for a while before answering.

“That is precisely the reason why you insulted me,” she said quietly, taking the receipt from Gregory’s hand and placing it on the counter. “You thought I had no business here simply because of the way I dressed.”

She looked up. “I believe you have just learned an important lesson.”

It seemed that these words struck Gregory as he was visibly shaken. His eyes were fixed on the receipt as if trying to memorize every word written on it.

“I do hope so,” he whispered.

“You will,” Lydia answered. For a moment, it seemed that she was about to fire the man on the spot as every eye in the store was on him. Even Michael, her regional director, waited for her response.

However, Lydia surprised everybody by changing her mind.

“I do not want you fired today,” she said, looking at Gregory. He looked up in surprise.

“But you will have to return for re-training,” she continued. “Every manager in my company will attend this course on respectful communication with customers. Tell me, sir, do you know why people buy things from our stores?”

Gregory studied her puzzled expression as he pondered her question.

“They buy our goods,” he said slowly. “However, if they cannot receive the respect we claim to give, then it is not worth it.”

“Precisely,” Lydia said, smiling slightly. “They buy our products, not our titles. Our employees must be able to provide the former regardless of the latter.”

She turned to the bystanding employees. “This store may sell luxury goods, but it does not deal in luxury treatment. I do hope you will keep this in mind.

The young cashier who had previously defended Lydia smiled at her employer. Before leaving, Lydia stopped by her side and thanked her for insisting on double-checking the receipt.

“I thought you were not being fair,” the girl said nervously, “and I did not like it.”

Lydia nodded. “Well, I wanted to make sure you were treated according to your high standards. That is why I hired you.”

As Lydia left the store, Michael walked up to her and apologized once again. She only smiled as she placed a hand over her belly.

“Now we know,” she said simply.

That Saturday, Gregory had received the shock of his life. Lydia Carter, an ordinary customer who entered his store, was not going to be his judge.

She had come to see if she could find faults in the system, as any other businessperson would. However, Lydia had not counted on becoming the victim of public humiliation and assumed she would be

able to fix the situation with a few polite words. It seemed that the rude manager had forgotten that every person deserved at least a shred of respect, regardless of their wealth, title, or position.

Lesson

Do not judge others based on their appearance, social status, or other external factors.

Treat everybody you meet with a degree of respect as you should not have to determine their worth before acknowledging their needs.
