They Humiliated an Old Man in the Park Then He Revealed Who He Really Was

It was a calm summer afternoon at the Botanical Garden in New York. Families gathered around the flower beds, kids played by the fountain, and birds flew from one tree to another.

On an old bench, a 72-year-old retired man sat, sipping a cup of coffee. His name was Walter Hayes. He wore a silver-haired and a tweed cap and had on a beige coat. Walter visited the place every Friday following the death of his wife.

As he peacefully enjoyed the scenery, 3 young men approached him. Logan, Tyler, and Mason were all college students who wasted their time filming random things on their phones for social media.

As Logan approached the old man and saw him enjoying his coffee, a wild idea came to him. He immediately called out to his friends and gestured that a good enough shot for their next video was near.

The boys then approached the old man on a lighter note than expected.

Logan rudely told the old man to get off the seat. Walter politely told him that there were many free benches around as he gestured around him.

The 3 young men did not notice the other empty benches and instead they wanted to see the old man get upset.

Mason pulled out his phone and prepared himself to record the moment as Tyler stood next to Walter with a cheeky grin.

Without Walter noticing, Tyler opened up a soft drink and emptied the liquid over his beige coat. The old man looked down at the wet stain on his coat and immediately looked up at the 3 young men.

Walter was completely surprised at what next unfolded. The 3 young men were laughing loudly as Mason continued to record their “great video”.

Their laughter caught the attention of some other visitors around them. However, no one dared to come and stop the young men.

Walter did not say a word.

He did not even glare at the 3 young men.

He stood up, took off his tweed cap, and placed it gently on his lap. He did not look surprised. He did not look unhappy.

He merely looked at the young men for a second and watched them continue laughing uncontrollably.

Logan took a step forward and told the old man not to worry. He was just testing him. Logan was sure the old man would have yelled already, but something about him made him realize that he was not mad at all.

However, something strange happened when he got up. Logan’s eyes caught the old man’s eyes. They were calm, collected and most importantly, strong. This was a far cry from what Logan expected.

Slowly, Walter stood up. The laughter of the 3 young men immediately died down as the old man fixed his coat. He faced them and told them that he should have walked away when he saw them approach him on the bench.

He had hoped that they would leave him alone and go about their way. The calmness in his voice seemed to worry Tyler more than an angry shout from Walter would have. Even Mason lowered his phone a bit at how Walter was looking at the 3 of them.

When Logan made a sarcastic remark again, Walter reached into his coat and took something out. The 3 young men stepped back, but this time, not out of fear but curiosity. Walter opened it to reveal an old military ID.

He then looked at Mason’s camera and told him that before he uploaded the video, he should know what he was filming. Mason lowered his phone and took a closer look at the veteran’s ID.

His facial expression showed mild surprise when he looked up at Walter’s face.

Walter did not come to threaten the young men.

He merely wanted them to understand that the old man they picked out of random to embarrass had served his country and had lived a long and exciting life, something which the 3 young men did not know anything about.

The veteran knew the value of his strength and experience and wanted the young men to reflect on theirs. He simply wanted them to know that the old man they had harassed was not a fool.

The 3 young men were finally surprised at how their day had gone. Their funny plan had backfired, and they now had to clean up their mess.

Mason put away his phone, Tyler apologized, and Logan picked up the empty soda bottle the young men had thrown at Walter.

The old man did not seek revenge, nor did he seek any form of pity. All he asked was that they clean up their mess. They did so as several people around them gave a round of quiet applause while Logan was still cleaning.

Logan approached the old man and apologized again. Walter accepted his apology but reminded him that some day, he too would be 72 and hoped that no one would treat him like they had treated Walter.

The young men left without saying another word. A woman named Claire Donovan, who was in the crowd, approached Walter and asked if he was all right but he said he was fine.

Claire asked him what was going on and why he had not become angry.

Walter smiled and told her that anger rarely did anything to solve a problem.

He then looked at the path the young men had taken.

He told Claire that the military ID was not to scare them but to remind them that every other person had a story. One he did not know about that he respected.

It was a story of trials, tribulations and bravery that every person had walked through and Walter only wished for people to be kind enough to understand.

Walter put his tweed cap back on, grabbed his coffee, and went back to his bench. As he walked away, the calmness of the garden returned.

Families gathered around the flower beds, kids played by the fountain, and birds flew from one tree to another. It was an afternoon much like any other at the Botanical Garden in New York.

However, 3 young men went home that day a lot more wiser. They had thought the elderly man to be weak and an easy target to make fun of.

Instead, they ended up realizing that there was a whole world of strength and bravery hidden under Walter’s calm exterior. They also learned that it was always better to treat everyone with kindness.

After all, the person they chose to mock might have a story as amazing as Walter’s.

Lesson

Never underestimate somebody just based on their appearance. One may look weak, but they may have a lot of hidden power and strength. Be respectful to everyone around you, including the people you think cannot fight back. It is only then that we will be able to appreciate people and their experiences.
