The Rich Man Humiliated a Poor Stranger at a Restaurant Then the Manager Called Him “Sir”

The rain had just stopped when Victor Hayes entered one of the most expensive downtown Boston restaurants. Dressed in a black business suit and a luxury watch

the rich businessman walked into the establishment accompanied by two of his friends. Everyone seemed to react to him with admiration and respect.

After all, he was a successful individual with a sharp character and a long career. Yet, he had something else – a sneering attitude towards people who had less than him.

As Victor entered the restaurant, a guest near the entrance caught his eye. Dressed in a brown worn jacket and pants, an old pair of shoes, this man looked like he had nothing to do

in such a place. As Victor passed by him, the guest simply moved backwards and bumped into Victor’s shoulder. The rich man turned around sharply and stared at the stranger.

“What are you doing? Watch where you are going, stupid!” Victor barked in disapproval.

Eli Carter immediately apologized and moved aside. However, Victor did not intend to stop there. Staring at the man’s worn-out clothes, he sneered.

“Fellas like you have no business here.”

Several guests turned to look at the arguing men. Eli held Victor’s gaze and calmly explained that he was only waiting for someone and would leave as soon as the person arrived. Victor scoffed.

“Who are you waiting for? The dish washer

His friends chuckled while a few nearby restaurant goers exchanged uneasy glances. Eli kept his cool, knowing that arguing with arrogant people would only make him look worse. Yet, Victor was not done insulting him. Pointing at the exit, the rich man told Eli to return to the street.

Eli finally looked into Victor’s eyes and said calmly. “I did not come here to cause you any trouble. I promise to leave as soon as my business is done.”

Victor shook his head in disbelief. He had already judged the man and decided that he was beneath him. However, the restaurant manager

Daniel Brooks, had different plans for Victor. As the man came out of the back office, he was not surprised to find the rude billionaire abusing a guest.

Yet, instead of ordering the poor fellow to leave, Daniel greeted Eli with a nervous smile.

“Mr. Carter, we have been waiting for you.”

Victor turned around, surprised.

Eli simply nodded. Daniel apologized for keeping him waiting and asked if everything was ready for his inspection. Victor looked at

Eli and then at Daniel. What did he mean? Eli turned to the manager and said that he was sorry but he would most likely need to conduct the inspection himself.

Victor suddenly felt a wave of unease wash over him.

“An inspection? What inspection are you talking about, sir?” Victor asked.

Daniel coughed nervously.

Eli casually took of his jacket and hung it on a nearby chair. As he did so, revealing a simple dress shirt underneath, he explained that he had come to inspect the restaurant prior to buying it. Victor laughed.

“Are you insane? No one in their right mind would buy this place dressed like that.”

Victor turned to Daniel.

“Does he know what he is getting into?”

Daniel looked at Eli.

“Actually, Mr. Carter has more authority here than you might think.”

The air in the restaurant seemed to turn tense. Victor turned to Eli and asked who the hell he was. But Eli turned to Daniel and said he needed the financial records, employee files, and ownership papers. Without a word, the manager hurried away and returned with a thick file in his hands. Eli opened it and studied the papers for a few moments.

Then he frowned. Victor followed his gaze and leaned in.

“What’s the problem?” Victor asked.

Eli closed the file

“There are a few discrepancies here.”

Victor chuckled. He waved the objections off, saying that the financial records were handled by professionals and that Eli probably did not understand half of what he was reading. Eli looked at him carefully.

“Are you sure?”

Victor clenched his fists. For months, the restaurant had been preparing for a change of ownership. The new buyer had hired Eli to ensure that the numbers added up prior to the closing. As an independent auditor, he had a reputation of finding things other people missed.

In fact, he had already found some shady transactions made by people close to the restaurant.

One of whom, he was sure of, was Victor.

Eli turned the page and frowned. The rich man’s eyes narrowed as he saw that Eli had found yet another suspicious transaction.

“What’s wrong?” he asked.

Eli pointed at the page. “This does not add up”.

Victor turned red, wishing he could disappear on the spot. He told Eli that the restaurant’s finances were handled by professionals and that he probably did not understand accounting.

Eli turned to him.

“Are you sure?”

Victor clenched his fists. For months, Eli had been preparing to take over one of the biggest Boston restaurant chains. The current owner had hired him to make sure everything was in order prior to closing the deal. Yet, during the course of inspection, Eli had found numerous shady deals made in the last year.

The kind of deals that could get these people in trouble.

And more importantly, the kind of deals that involved Victor Hayes.

Eli turned the page again. His face turned red.

“What is it now?” Victor asked.

Eli turned to him.

“This will change everything.”

The room grew tense. Daniel stood nearby, watching the unfolding argument.

Victor turned to him.

“You accuse me of what?”

Eli turned to him. “Not yet.”

He turned the front page of the file and looked at a certain passage. Then, he turned to Victor.

“You should really read this before you ask me any more questions.”

Victor turned the page and stared at the document.

What he did not know was that this was not a document related to the restaurant.

It was a financial report dealing with some of his largest business ventures. One venture, in particular, had incurred heavy losses. The report outlined the debts he owed to several of his business partners.

His face turned pale. He looked at Eli, who simply waited for him to process the news.

Daniel, meanwhile, looked at the document. Then, he went white. The name of the company printed on the top of the page was familiar to him. It belonged to one of the largest restaurant chains in the country.

Victor suddenly realized what was happening. He turned to Eli.

“You are blackmailing me.”

Eli shook his head. “Not blackmailing. Investigating.”

Victor clenched his fists. He remembered the private transactions he had conducted with several businesses over the years

. He had not intended to keep any of the money for himself. Each of these transactions had been covered by taxes and placed under the account of a different company.

In other words, there was no way for anyone to prove these payments had ever happened.

Eli simply stared at him.

Victor knew that the reputation of one of the largest restaurant chains in the country rested on his next move.

The entire restaurant seemed to hold its breath as Victor turned to the file. Then, slowly, he turned the page. And the moment he saw what was on it, the manager whispered in stunned horror.

“Oh my God…”

It would take years for the scandal to fully unfold. It would take even longer for Victor to realize the error of his ways.

Lesson

One should never judge a person based on their status in society. Victor judged Eli based on the way he was dressed and the fact that he did not carry himself like a rich man. He insulted the stranger and made him feel bad for no reason other than the fact that Eli was poor.

Yet, the poor man had more than enough power to ruin Victor’s life. Therefore, one should judge people based on who they are, not what they have.
